About Dr. Nelson

Jennifer Nelson entered the acupuncture field with a passion that every patient she sees has the potential to be at their best and be strong physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

Jennifer started her journey in Physical Therapy.  After injuring herself and discovering first-hand the effectiveness of acupuncture she began to pursue a path toward Traditional Chinese Medicine.  She mentored under a Japanese acupuncturist for almost a year before enrolling in Acupuncture School.

Jennifer attended the Alberta College of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine and began working with Dr. Ma, a 27th generation Chinese Doctor.  In her spare time Jennifer still works in his herbal shop today.  She has learned Mandarin and a lifetime of knowledge from her mentor.

Initially after graduation, Jennifer began working in a sports clinic with professional athletes and Olympians and gained a wealth of experience and knowledge in treating sports injuries and pain conditions.  Jennifer found that although she was treating athletes, many of the conditions hindering their performance issues were underpinned by hormone imbalances.  Through her work with many female athletes, Jennifer found her calling treating woman’s health and hormone issues.

Jennifer has taken a large number of specialized courses in gynaecology, infertility, obstetrics (acupuncture for pregnancy) and paediatrics.  She specializes and enjoys teaching our youth about what a regular period is to prevent problems in the future with infertility, fibroids and endometriosis.  A large portion of her practice is focused on menstrual problems, infertility issues, pregnancy and postpartum issues and menopause.

Jennifer loves being active and giving educational talks, seminars, getting out to the mountains, hiking, soccer, running and swimming.  Jennifer is happy to be giving back to Calgary as a community and looks forward to helping you live a stronger life.

Jennifer recently made an appearance on Calgary’s breakfast television to discuss healthy snacking.  See the clip on Power Health’s facebook site.

Recipe: #1:

ENERGY BALLS

1 cup pumpkin seeds

1 cup sesame seeds

1 cup quinoa flakes or rolled oats

1 cup mini dairy free chocolate chips

1 cup raisins

1 cup dried cranberries

1/2 cup cocoa

2 cups almond butter

1/2 cup honey

1 1/2 cups unsweetened coconut

Method:

Spread coconut in a large frying pan on med-low heat. Stir coconut until nicely browned. Once coconut is browned spread on a large plate.

Then in a large bowl, mix all ingredients EXCEPT coconut. Roll the ingredients into balls using a tablespoon, then your hands. Then roll the balls into the coconut.

Can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week, or in the freezer for up to one month.

Recipe #2:

PROTEIN BALLS

1 scoop VEGA powder

2 heaping tbsps cocoa powder

3 tbsps almond butter

2-3 tbsps honey

1/2 tsp salt

1 tbsp quinoa flakes

1 tbsp coconut ( preferably unsweetened)

Method

Mix all ingredients together, add 1/2 tsp of water if batter doesn't come together enough to roll easily.

The original recipe also calls for sesame seeds to roll the balls in.

Dr. Nelson Comments:
I have made the recipe many times, and have made it with the VEGA powder which has omegas in it which are imprortant for brain functioning as well as probiotics, but have also used whatever protein powder I had on hand, with just as good of results. I have also used peanut butter, and they taste great too. However for school purposes and potential allergies, the almond butter would be better. I also like rolling them in hemp seeds/hearts to make them a little healthier.
